Make Your Own Seed Tape
« on: January 19, 2015, 09:25 »
Having used seed tape for my carrots last year and having success with it, then buying cheap packets of carrot seeds in the Wyevale 50p seed sale I'm seriously thinking of doing this, during these frozen no growing months.

Cadalot, I don't know if this counts as an 'intellectual property rights' issue, but could you give a brief synopsis? I live out in the middle of nowhere and an eleven-minute film is beyond the capabilities of my internet connection.

 1. Take an approx. 1.2m length of 2 ply toilet paper
 2. pull the ply's apart
 3. Lay on work surface / pasting table
 4. Mix equal measures of flour and water to make bio degradable glue
 5. Dob the glue at the required centres of the seeds at 1/4 way into the width of the paper
 6. drop the seeds on the glue
 7. Fold the paper in half so the two long edges are now touching and flatten with hand
 8. Move paper and wipe surface down and relay seed tape to dry
 9. Repeat steps 5 - 8 for the second single ply length (he did both at once)
10. Once dry roll up until you need them

In the first photo on the left there are two he has already made in true Blue Peter tradition so he can roll them up at the end because they are dry.

A good idea, but the presentation was awful - all the arm waving was driving me nuts  ::)  :D

Plus he is in his PJ's - but I'm considering it as I had good results with a purchased seed tape last year and it mean less time on my hands and knees, and no thinning.

This could be useful for parsnip seed too I suspect  ;)

Thanks for writing all that up, Cadalot. I might give it a go. I had some great carrots that were absolutely no effort from some Nantes seed tape. I'm trying parsnip seed tape this year. But the tape is quite expensive in comparison with the seeds. I guess even though the seeds might absorb some moisture from the glue, it's not enough for them to germinate or go mouldy.

I was wondering if that would happen too

This looks like a great idea. If it is done and the tape planted in the next day or two the seed won't have time to go mouldy or germinate.
