Strawberries
« on: June 08, 2009, 21:34 »
Is it too late to plant out strawberry plants from a nursery?

If I can is it better to remove any flowers and fruit for this year?

over to the experts any advice appreciated,

Thanks,

justin

We've always planted ours in the Autumn as we believed strawberries are a bit like garlic in that they like cold spell to make them fruit well the next year.  We buy ours in late August and plant in September so they still have a while 'in the warm' to settle in and then they get the cold bit.

I bought some marshmellow strawberry plants a while back from marshalls and they recomended that you remove the flowers for the first year to let the plant gain strength and then you get a bumper crop the following year. Have to say I did just that and had an enormous amount. :D
Can you hear voices?

Thanks for the advice.

I’m just thinking it may be better to plant in September or March next year and use the space now for courgettes.

If I do will the Sept 09 or March 10 planted strawbs produce fruit in the first summer?

thanks again,

justin

To reaffirm my reply, the ones we got last August and planted in September we are now getting at least three a day. I don't like them, waiting for my raspberries which are now budding up and beginning to turn red.  OH prefers strawbs and is in seventh heaven.
