What type of cucumner is THAT!
« on: July 22, 2018, 12:11 »

My cucumbers aint cucumbers, or at learst what I think cucumbers should be...

They are thicker and shorter, far less moist than my usual cuc's.  Tried them in a salad (peeled and inpeeled) - not very nice, not 'nasty' just different.  What the heck are they and what to do with them now I've got them? ? ?

Cheers,  Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

Do they look any different to a normal cuke, if so a photo would help. What variety was it/or was it supposed to be, do you know?

If they look like short 'ordinary' cukes then maybe the heat has affected the flavour a bit, or an all female variety that go pollinated when it shouldn't.

Sorry it's all questions, but there could be a few reasons for what's happening  ::)

Good morning MoS.  Whereas the inner of a 'normal cuc' is slightly opaque or opalescent, this cuc is white.  Looking at snaps of varieties of cuc' I think it could be a ridge cuc',  I bought two when the Countrywide shop was closing down (a very sad loss).  no label.

Cheers,  Tony.

Outdoor ridge cukes don't usually taste any different, to greenhouse ones IMO - so can only assume the weather is affecting the taste.

Perhaps they'll be better when the weather gets back to normal  ::)

I took my 1st cucumber at the weekend and it was quite as you describe, crunchy, not very juicy, white coloured and a very mild flavour. The variety I planted is Jogger, an F1 with rough skins. They're good for slicing into sandwiches and burgers due to their crunch and don't dominate other flavours. Good for people like me who don't like cucumbers too much!

Further to my last comment, see the attached picture of the 'Jogger' cuke...

I've grown cucumbers in my polytunnel for the first time. They are all yellow, so wish I'd kept the packets to see if they are a special variety.  Or maybe, cucumbers can't be grown in polytunnels.

Not 100% sure of it but I think on the BBC program at Beechgrove last Sunday someone covered cucumbers, about 4 varieties amybe 5. 1 or 2 of those were reported as poor.  One ws thick skinned and really it seemed required peeling first.

Have to say I was not really watching it, only caught the cucumber bit, I have a single plant with a single cucumber on it. Only a small cucumber but it is called "Mini" so cannot expect large cucumbers I suppose. That also tastes different but not unpleasant.

Thinking that maybe you could locate it on the BBC site and have a replay of it, yours may just be one mentioned.

There are yellow ones around.  I'm growing one this year called Ruby Wallace.  There isn't any reason you couldn't grow them in a polytunnel.  I have plants outside and in the greenhouse.  The skins are thicker than traditional hot house cukes, but I don't mind that  :)
