?Winter cauliflowers
« on: November 12, 2013, 13:37 »
Was given what I was told were some winter cauliflower earlier this year. Planted them in about May/June. They have grown as tall as my PSB and have leaves curled around at the top but nothing growing.
Have tried to find info about what they should look like but not really found anything useful.
Wondering if been given something different given by experienced plot holder
Any advise appreciated
Thanks
Jude

A photo would be useful.

Winter cauli seeds are not usually sown until around June, so plants would be very early.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

There are so many cultivars of cauli - it would be good to know precisely which yours is - but assuming it's unknown I'd attach significance to the word 'Winter'.

Have mentioned before vernalisation and in the past caulis would head up at varying times during the Winter, depending on how hard a Winter it was, and including early Spring if the Winter was really hard, but since living
on the South Coast a mild spell in December is enough to set them off heading.

So dunno when yours will, but they sound like they're doing fine, and something to look forward to.

Best wishes

Tom

These are mine as of last week:

Walcheren-winter- 3 is the variety -- they will hopefully head up from about late March to early May

As you can see, they are quite big plants, although my PSB is 1.5m tall, so clearly no where near that league

Was just surprised they are so tall.

Yep, caulis can be massive plants. I see it as a good sign, if the plant is big, it means there is a good chance of a decent sized head in the future.  :)
