Pigeon poo!
« on: April 01, 2011, 10:36 »
I have lots of pigeon poo available for use on my plot, i've found out what i can use it for it seems its good for soft fruit and brassicas(mixed in a couple of weeks before i plant), the chap who runs the site said to mix it in with my potatoes and i have looked into making a liquid feed with it. I was wondering if there was anything else or anything you would specifically not use it on?
Many thanks

You could use it on everything but leave for a year if fresh, its very strong.

If it's at all dusty, wear a surgical-type or painter's mask when gathering it.

I have my own racing pigeons and lots of poo. It's particularly good for blueberries, if you have them. I also spread it over the whole garden if I have enough. It's good for everything provided it's not too fresh.

Thanks for the replies.
It's very dry so i'll get a mask. I'm going to mix it in to the raised beds that my carrots and parsnips will go into, how long do you suggest i leave it before i sow into the beds (couple of weeks?) or can i sow straight away?

General manuring rules of thumb suggest you wait between 2-3 weeks before seeding so things settle down and rain mellows out the manure's strength. Apply the manure with a light hand in the carrot and parsnip areas; the soil there does need some feeding but not as much as other areas.

On my new allotment there are sacks and sacks of wood shavings with pigeon poo (presumably the previous tenant had pigeons and these are the loft clearings). Can I use these for anything or do I need to compost them or something first?

You'd need to compost it all because the wood shavings need to break down first, unless they already have.

I managed to get one of the beds dug over and as weed free as i could, i'll grab some masks tomorrow and have a poke around in the huge pile of poo (never though i'd be saying that! :D) and see whats going on with it. i think its been there for a couple of years to be honest so might have to compost the top stuff and maybe use the stuuf at the bottom.

Pigeon poo in small doses when fresh on the compost heap works wonders.
