Plastic bottles to protect Sweetcorn
« on: August 21, 2016, 23:30 »
Hi Folks
It's getting to that time of year when I need to protect my developing sweetcorn from the rats on the allotment. I've seen people suggest 2l pop bottles as well as 2 pint milk bottles - both pierced to aid ventilation. Which method works best? Does the fact that the milk bottles are opaque make any difference?

Any thoughts or suggestions are welcome, as are any other methods to rat proof the sweetcorn. I'm prepared to share a small amount of my crops with the various critters that live on the allotment, but not all of them!

Cheers

Sue

I had a problem with mice eating my corn and solved the problem by tying old socks over the corn. I thought the mice might chew through them, but they were fine. Just secured around the base with a bit of string once the tassels start to die off.
