What Is This Fruit Bush Please?
« on: August 27, 2016, 11:55 »
Hello all

I have just taken over an allotment and nestled in between the raspberries are a few of these bushes, can anyone tell me what they are please?  They did have a few fruits on which looked like blackberries but they are a small (three foot-ish) bush type plant with no thorns.

Any help appreciated!

Hello and welcome! I can't be certain but it certainly looks like some sort of blackberry, I have one called Reuben, a primocane variety which has turned out to be rubbish with very few, very small berries.  It looks a bit like yours.  I'm digging it up shortly it's had 3 years so I'm giving up on it.  I think here up north (I'm not far from you) the climate doesn't suit.  Maybe others can identify yours with more certainty..

I agree, here, the hybrid blackberries seem to have the largest flowers, of all the fruit - but Boysenberry, Tayberry and Loganberries all have the same style of flowers, so, as jezza says, it could be any one of those.

If it is, it would quickly become much bigger than a 3ft bush, though. So I'm puzzled

Thank you all very much for your input! I am also puzzled

I will compare them to your suggestions, I would like to know what to do about pruning but in the absence of anything definite I might be best to just leave it alone?

Thanks again.
