In praise of Cobra FGB
« on: August 14, 2014, 19:35 »
Hi All,
I posted earlier this season saying what great Peas Kelveden Wonder are, well now I want to sing the praises of Cobra French Green Beans.

I have grown them for a few years now & each year they give a great crop. Even the the cool wet summers of a few years ago they just kept on giving.

My other notable mentions are for Setton / Sturon Onions & Desiree Spuds.
99% Organic and 1% Slug Pellets.

Allotment holder since 27th May 2007.

Apparently you used to be able to buy seeds that suited your district and growing conditions , but the EU put a stop to that  ::) ::)

The EU can't stop you saving your own seed which is the best way of getting plants adapted to your particular conditions.

No they cannot. but I think if they could find a way they would. but you have to know what seeds are best for your area. trial and error? or is there a web site  with that type of information?

I think it comes with trial and error - even on the same allotment site you can have very different growing conditions.  My first plot was near the top of the hill, dry soil in a hot summer, the wind would catch it.  I moved to the bottom of the hill (bigger plot) but it is slow to warm up in spring (cold air drops) but during hot summer weather, it is better sheltered and retains moisture better.

Besides, trying out new varieties is all part of the fun  :D

Our cobras have given us a great crop of tasty beans, but we're now picking the last beans from the top of the plants and there's no evidence of a second flush of flowers. Is it too late to hope for more?

Not that we're too worried - the runners are just starting.

We have loved our Cobras too

Ours are also 'finishing' now, but been well fed from only 6 plants they were a last minute sowing as had an empty pot!

Next year more space to the Cobras- and freezer space will be waiting!
Very often quite lost- would be more lost if I could work out where I was!- But always find my way home.....
