Plots near trees ?
« on: January 16, 2007, 20:04 »
Hello, Digger yer,
This old bloke called John Harrison said i would get some good advice on this yer forum.
well yer goes,
Is it a good idea to have a plot near to fruit trees?
I have an apple and a plum tree near to where i plan to ave my plot and after watching 'Grow your own veg' on BBC and what with her having problems by planting near her mangolia tree i thought to meself "Ay digger you was thinking of making a plot this year down the end of the garden wasnt you?" so i thought "Yes i was"
Anyway what do you folk here reckon?

and if its not a good idea then how far from fruit trees should a plot be?

Best regards
From Digger

well it realy depends on how old/mature the trees are
theres a general rule (not wriiten in stone)
where the branches end drop a imaginary line down to the ground then add a meter to that and you will be safe away from the roots then i'm sure
feed the soil not the plants
organicish
you learn gardening by making mistakes

yeh to what shaun says work round the trees by planting small stuff under trees like lettuce n such dont dig down more than 18 inches .if roots in the way of an old established tree cut them through if they are less than an inch thick .work round the bigger ones

Most veg. need good light all day Parsnip, and not sat in the shade either.Steer well clear of the fruit or any other trees or walls for that matter. You want a nice open sunny spot.

My whole allotment has the dreaded Cypress along one side...we're talking big jobbies here and 'preserved' (they'd be toast, if it were up to me)...apparently they separate the garden's of the 'worthy' from the 'hoi polloi'....consequence of which is that the allotments up my end are as dry as a bone from May through August...like dust....

Some may die under 'suspicious circumstances' this year...I dunno...watch this space... :D
If life gives you lemons...wrap a dog turd in newspaper and set fire to it on Life's doorstep.

You could build a movable ark and keep chooks under them. That way you get eggs as well as fruit.

youve got me thinking now johhno,
a raised bed on wheels, then during the day i could roll it away out of the shade of the trees!
i could pull it down the pub to show off my veg to my mates who dont know where i live,
maybe i could even tow it on holiday with me to save the neighbour coming round and watering.

brill
thanks mate
