showing figs?
« on: July 27, 2015, 16:11 »
Having been bitten by the show bug last year, I have just been through this year's schedule to see which classes we could maybe enter, and came across "Any other fruit" and all I have is figs that might be ripe by 5th September.

I cannot find any info about how to present these, or how many to put out.

Does anyone know please?

Might there be something in The Victorian Gardener series?

I seem to recall them being in a basket lined with leaves for taking to the house, but not showing them. If all else fails, I shall have to go with that. Thank you, Snowy  :)

RHS Show Handbook.
Figs
Merits - Large, fully ripe fruits, of good colour with bloom and stalks intact.
Defects - Fruits small, unripe, of poor colour or with imperfect bloom.
Advice to judges - slight splitting is not a defect.
Condition - 5 points
Uniformity - 3 points
Size - 5 points
Colour 3 points
TOTAL - 16 points.

I doubt if the judges will use a points system as they will be judged against other sorts of fruit. Size and condition are still important. Other fruit might be cherries, blueberries, medlars, loganberries, blackberries etc.

Cut them with some stem. Handle as little as possible. Do not polish. I would place them on a plain white plate with one or two small leaves. Uneven numbers look best i.e. 3 or 5.

You are a star, Salmo.  :D Good to know what points are awarded for too.

Thanks very much: 3 the same size (as far as possible) on a white plate with stems attached it will be, as untouched as I can manage, with three small leaves, one between each fruit.

Now I'd like that if I was judging  :nowink:

Last year's winner was quinces, the year before blueberries. I thought figs might be a good bet, as non-one has exhibited them recently, assuming they are good enough of course.
