what to plant next after spuds?

The potatoes are ready to lift, so what do you suggest I palnt next?  Not too sure on crop rotation. :?  Is it correct you should not plant another root crop?  Would the dwarf beans be ok to plant or cabbage?

I planted carrots after potatoes and they went all forked so maybe the soil is too rich by that point... having said that, then you don't want legumes because they enrich the soil too, so I guess brassicas are your next thing... Radishes are in the brassica family too if you're not too keen on cabbage
wistfully hoping to one day be mostly organic gardener in North London.

Tricky, you being in Spain, to know what to say in some ways.

Usually you lime after potatoes, potatoes like their soil more acid than most vegetables.  Cabbage family like a rich soil but with high pH (NOT acid) but you can't lime and manure at the same time.

Beans are less fussy, although they don't like it too acid either. Like all legumes, they contribute nitrogen via the bacteria fixing in the root nodules.

In my crop rotation I follow pototoes with beans/peas, then follow the beans/peas with brassicas so they can enjoy the extra nitrogen, then follow brassicas with onion family and carrots.
Gardening organically on chalky, stony soil.

In the crop rotation I intend to use next spring the following are to replace potatoes:

Brussels sprouts, cabbages, cauliflowers, broccoli, calabrese, kale, kohl-rabi, radishes,  swedes, turnips

In addition bring the pH level up to 6.5 - 7.0

Hope this helps
