OK,
So i said i am new to this,
I have myself a bit confused as to how to start to grow potatos;

do i plant seed pots, or will ordinary spuds do?

Do i just put in ground or do they sprout first,

if sprout, when and how?

I expect this is simplest of knowledge to u guys but i have had conflicting info. i know what i think iassume right but
" assumption is the mother of all **xx!!??xx** ups"

Please set me straight on this, also are european kidney jersey royals or something like that,
thanks
When the sun shines i dig,
When rain pours i dig
When the wind blows---I SURF.

Allan

look in the information bit on this site theres a bit read there.
seed spuds are usually in garden centres after the new year
feed the soil not the plants
organicish
you learn gardening by making mistakes

Well, I planted my first ever spuds this year - I got a couple of bags of seed pots from the bargain bin at the garden centre for 99p each!  One bag of Anya (salad spuds) and the other Desiree (maincrop).  I put them in egg boxes on the windowsill for a month or so, and planted them when they had sprouted in about mid April - as soon as I'd got the (virgin) ground dug over.  I earthed them up a couple of times, and had a fair few Anya, and about 30lbs of Desiree (from a bed 4'x12' ish).  I didn't prepare the ground the autumn before, as I only got the plot in April, but I've lobbed lots of horse manure on next year's bed, and covered it with black plastic.

One of my plot neighbours planted the supermarket spuds that I'd left in a cupboard for a bit too long (they had long white sprouts on), and got a crop, but he planted them too close together in my view, and didn't get a good yield.  One of my books says that shop bought spuds are often treated with agents to stop or slow sprouting, so may not be very vigorous.

Hope this is some help!

not yet,
 8)   i mainly do chalkwell ,thames ,near southend, Which produces a river called the RAY when the tide goes, out. speed records are attempted here with the wind the right way.
I also sail on the river orwell as the mother in law has a caravan right on the rivers edge.
I am yet to attack heavy waves, as much as i love it, my progression is very slow.

yeah, i know some winter swimmers down here, all seem to be 60+

I reckon you loose a little common sense as you grow older. or you gain a strange tolerance to  cold.

Dont matter how silly it looks in winter, wetsuit wetsuit wetsuit.
very toastie if it fits properly.
