Where do you keep your chickens?
« on: July 27, 2007, 13:34 »
I live in a flat, so no garden. I'm really seriously considering keeping chickens in the next year or so at the allotment. The allotment is about 25 minutes away from the flat (walking), 5 minutes by car.

For those of you that keep chooks on the lottie, how do you cope with them? Space, chicken house, feeding, etc. Can they be disciplined enough to stay on your plot only, not wandering to other peoples?

My grandma's chicken go everywhere, but then again, she has masses of land and neighbours don't mind as they've chooks too. They come back every evening to sleep without problems and seem to know. What's your experience?

You may have to check whether you are allowed to keep chickens on your allotment. Persevere they are worth it!!!

They're allowed! And so are bees, but that's another aspiration all together. One allotmenteer has a whole plot just for livestock. He has chicken, ducks, pigeons etc..... You don't see them roaming about, but the pigeons are released for flying exercises in the afternoons. They're naughty though, stealing peoples' fruit and veg.

Poultry would need to be fenced in else they would eat everything ! or just dig it up.

You can quite successfully keep hens in sheds and an outside run. there's a few of us on here who do it that way. And sheds are so easy to convert it's child's play. Honest.
