Weeding .... again
« on: January 29, 2015, 10:05 »
Apologies if it's been covered before but here goes.

For various reasons I've been unable to get on my plot for a couple of months (or more) ... maybe someone can advise me as to when and how to deal with the weeds. Can I just turn the soil or will that not get rid of them ... I'm willing to consider weed killing but not over enthusiastic, normally I hoe on a warm day and gather as much as I can but this is too big a job for that treatment.

Many thanks for taking the time

Roger

That doesn't look too bad to me.

I think a light forking would loosen them enough to pick them out.

depends how hard your soil is but i would give it a light forking and rake off the weeds. if you have light, sandy soil you may just get away with raking.

doesn't look too bad to me.

What a great, easy, comfortable task - hoeing simple weeds like you have!

Give yourself an hour in the January sunshine, grab a Dutch hoe, and just do it, Roger!

So my advice is - 'just do it'!

small, Welsh and almost certainly bonkers, but can be tamed with Talisker, if required

Thank you one and all for your encouragement, it obviously looks worse than it is (in my eyes). When I inherited the plot it was pretty clear and I've kept on top of it so this is a new 'look' for me.

I look forward to seeing you all on Sunday morning to lend a 'practical' hand ... tea and biscuits will be provided - on completion of the task !

Best Roger

you'll be fine Roger - and you are in a lovely part of the world - I do like Christchurch. enjoy! but stretch those back muscles every now and then!
Isn't it satisfying when you stand there staring at your lovely clean soil, cuppa in hand? Marvellous

Yes we're really lucky compared to a lot of the country with snow and blizzards, I'm sitting at the computer with blue sky out of the window, a bit of wind. A few more dry days and I'll be able to get back on the plot ...

It's not all bad news Rogertb - with a 4" covering of snow I can't see any weeds here!
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Sharpen your hoe then cut the weeds off and rake them up. Any that re-grow can have the same treatment. Any left can be hand-weeded.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
