If I spray gold and silver paint for a decorative effect on bay trees for example will it cause them serious permanent damage?

Would be fine on grass but I don't suppose that is what you were asking?  Traditionally during World Cup/European Cup (when we qualify) times, I have painted the England flag on my grass using white emusion and red spray paint.  Some were horrified and said the grass would die.  It did nothing to it at all!  But then grass is a bit more sturdy than other plants isn't it?

Think of Goldfinger and the gold-painted actress (Shirley Easton?). Cover all the pores and you die!!!  They had to be very careful to film it quickly and not cover everywhere.!

I can't really understand why you would want to spray bushes with paint  

We look after and water our bay trees and they reward us with their leaves for cooking.
