Feeding inside the coop
« on: October 30, 2012, 16:45 »
I know it isn't ideal feeding the girls inside the coop, but with the rubbish weather I'm really struggling to keep the feed dry, obviously just a little but of moisture can ruin the food.

If I feed them inside and remove it at night will it cause any problems?

Thanks

You should remove the food at night anyway and then put it back in the day. They are not normally fed in the coop and should be fed in their run. Watered out there too. The coop is for laying eggs and sleeping in  :)

Thanks for your reply, however as I said I know it isn't ideal, but I want to know if it will cause any problems. You didn't give me any.

It would only be on wet days as even with tarp over the run water is getting underneath and drops are dripping in.

Our chickens always have their feed inside their coops.  But then their coops are large, and when we had 15 assorted coops and sheds full of chickens it just wasn't viable to take the feed out every night either.

Rats do chew their way through the wood to get at the food, but if you are going to remove the food at night I can't see there being any problem.

Thanks GrannieAnnie. It is a big coop, I bought one meant for 9 hens so I got a decentish sized run, but have only got 3 girls, so there isn't worry about the lack of space.

if you do have their feed in their coop and don't remove it at night then please make sure it is nowhere where they can poop onto it.
Staffies are softer than you think.

At the weekend I'm gonna fashion something so I can hang it like it is when I feed in their run :)

Folks use the small over-radiator clothes airers to hang the Omlet "glug" feeders on

Mine lives in a shed and the treadle feeder is in there.  Always dry and ratsafe (hopefully).
