Creosote
« on: October 14, 2012, 20:50 »
Just discovered a plot holder today painting some stinky stuff on his boards.

Creosote he tells me.
Hasn't that been banned I ask?
Yes but it's the only stuff that works.

AGGGHH.

What do I do?
If it's safe when it's dry does that mean each time it's rainy and soggy and his boards get wet the stuff will leach off?

If it's creosote isn't it banned for good reason?

old engine oil makes a good preservative too (only it is prone to still leaving your hands dirty if you handle it - even 30 years later).

Son was using creosote on the farm in the summer, I sent him off with hat,  goggles, face mask, gloves, old boots and his blue all in ones with strict instructions not to let it get on his skin or inhale it.  Apparently I put the fear of god in him ::)

If you do mind about what he's done, and you're on a council plot, I'd be minded to contact the council and let them know what he's done - using illegal and carcinogenic chemicals on land for the production of veggies is something I'd hope they take seriously and make him remove the treated wood.

But that is rather a nuclear option.

Realistically Creosote is quite hard to get hold of, nowadays.

It's more likely that he's used Creocote, which smells just as bad to me
(the manufacturers agree  :D )

I love the smell of creosote and jeyes too!  Strange people aren't we?

But the plot neighbour could be using real creosote that he's had in the shed for years.  It is still possible to buy it, depends who you know...........

I don't think the new formula Jeyes Fluid has as pleasant a bouquet as the old stuff,a dab of it behind the ear is still nicer than a drop of Brut though..

It's not illegal to buy or use creosote. and it hasn't been band from use, you have to be in the trade to buy and use it though, like on construction, the fumes are harmful and also if its in contact with the skin, but thats like with years of use on a daily bases, I wouldn't worry about it too much if I was you, it will take a lot more than that to harm you, I have some on my shed and it works great, keeps the bugs away for years, I think its made from the oil from coal? (coal tar) so on that bases dont me treading on tarmacadam, like pavements roads or the like

Not quite right Dopey:

http://www.hse.gov.uk/biocides/copr/creosote.htm

Since 30 April 2003 retailers can no longer sell creosote and coal tar creosote wood preservatives to the general public in Great Britain

Since 30 June 2003 general public can no longer use creosote and coal tar creosote wood preservatives in Great Britain

Approvals for professional and industrial creosote/coal tar creosote products were allowed to continue, subject to restrictions on the specification of the products and restrictions on where wood that has been treated with creosote/coal tar creosote could be used. The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills  provided information on these restrictions.  These are now detailed on Annex XVII of the REACH Regulation.
