making your own yogurt ?
« on: October 11, 2012, 14:26 »
my new steamer has a facility on it for this but what is the advantage of making your own ??
some people are like slinkys......they're really good for nothing, but they still bring a smile to your face as you push them down the stairs!!

Again not necessarily cheaper, but your own yogs won't have the additives that they must put in commercial stuff.  I know they always say no preservatives, but........

And you can get it to your own thickness and add your own flavours.

I used to have a little electric yoghurt maker that I paid £1 at a boot sale, but I gave it to my daughter.  I loved it.

I have just ordered the easiyo from Lakeland to try it out.  It's not electric, but has quite good reviews.

I have an Easiyo Grannie and it works really well.  I don't buy the sachets any more as they are quite dear but buy a small pot of live probiotic yogurt and use it with a litre of full fat UHT milk (so I don't have to go through the heating/cooling process).  Then I reserve some for the next batch.  :)

Thanks for that Auntiemogs.  I have ordered 2 of their boxes of sachets, but I was going to try it with live yog too as I used to make my yoghurt in a thermos too in the old days!

Ordered it Monday, so hope it will be here soon.   I just love Lakeland!

It's Oikos  - silly billy

I thought I'd try one, cos they sounded nice, but when I looked, Trashcos weren't stocking them - too busy with their own brand I spose

I know, I was avoiding saying the brand name.  :nowink: You mentioned lemon in yoghurt and for some reason, I thought of that advert. ::)

Proper Greek yoghurts are devine (probably because they include sheeps milk as well) but home made comes pretty close  ;)

I've got the EasiYo gadget and find the Lakeland shop in town often has the sachets on a deal so stock up when I see them.

We eat most of our yogurt as lassi or as a side dish to curry, so I buy the pro-biotic plain yogurt sachets.  My mum gave me a leccy gadget and I had 50/50 success and total fails - never did work out why   You get 1kg of yogurt from a sachet.  Compared to the price of the decent quality pro-biotic stuff in the shops and the amount of milk and live yogurt  I used to waste, it works out OK price wise for me  :)

If you are making yoghurt with live yogurt, if you want it to be a little thicker then mix a tablespoon of dried milk powder with the milk

An Asian colleague showed me how to do this when making yogurt with a thermos.

I have an Easi-yo but making it without the mixes is easy enough. Yogurts are not all made equal though so you have to shop around to find the ones that make the best catalyst. The Express dairies was a good one.  I went to Indian cookery classes and one of the lessons was to find the best bought yogurt as a starter for making our own yogurt, and that's the one we found worked the best.  Can you still get it though?

I have some yogurt strainers for making Greek yogurt or yogurt "cheese" but it's only the same principle as using a cloth
