Are there any crops you don't attempt to grow, due to your shorter warm growing season, albeit, I guess you get more light in summer?

The ones you'd consider outdoor staples are : tomatoes / basil / peppers / cucumber / runner beans (some do).

It isn't even a simple question of day-time temperatures, the real problem I have is the overnight lows giving a much shorter frost-free period.

Do you try french or dwarf beans? as they seem to crop quicker than runners?

Ooh my word, Muntjac might be in for a shock when he moves halfway up to Dumriesshire, even though that is only midway between where he is now and yourself.

Not at all. Dumfries is near the sea & is basically at sea level.  He will enjoy a very mild climate (similar to Isle of Man which is only 50 miles away).

As WG says the gulf stream is not that far away to Muntys possible new home so it makes a massive difference between west and east coast, to a point we get the effects of it although it is further away, however we tend to only grow the winter staples and dont try others, beans will get hammered by the winds we can get. There a few plot holders on our site that will grow broad beans but again they are covered and protected from the winds.

That part of Scotland is ery mild, warmed by the Gulf stream.  There is a subtropical garden called Logan Gardens over in the West.  It's lovely:

Just got me ruler out, on a latitude basis, that puts Bath about as south from Inverness as Bordeaux is from Bath.

'spose that makes us all southern mediterranean softies south of Birmingham.

:? errm  :?  Yes.  I am on the same latitude as Sitka in Alaska.

I was giggling yesterday at poor chrissie trying to grow parsnips in Greece while we all want to grow warm-weather crops in the UK. Never happy, are we?

Only got thinking cos of John's book, I pm'd him to see if he'd adjusted it for various parts of the UK, I then realised that we get an awful lot of different weather/climate for a small island.

PS - think I'd rather have good old root veg than warm weather crops all year round.
