Anyone tried Speedy dwarf French beans?
« on: October 01, 2012, 19:04 »
I picked up a packet in the 50p sale at Wyevale. I wanted to do some early beans in my tunnel next year, so thought these might do the job. Anyone know if they're any good?

I tried ordinary dwarf french beans once, but the plants were so small that the beans dangled on the floor and got eaten by slugs, so that's why I tried them only once. I prefer climbing ones. Hope you get better results with yours.

I tried doing that this year  ;) and planted some in a big tub. They weren't as quick as they said - but the weather was extra cool this spring, even inside ::)

They're ok for the first flush of beans, but pull them out right after, if I were you  :)

I grow dwarf french beans around the edge of my raised beds - had good success last year - this year germination was erratic.

Yep, that's what I was planning to do. I did that with some Oregon Sugar Pod mangetout in my tunnel this year and had a really good early crop, sowed 19th Feb, cropping in May, June and pulled by the end of June, just as the mangetout outside were starting to crop. I'll be doing some tall French beans outside as well, it's just to extend the season a bit.

Whereas we grew Speedy   beans at school last year in the cold greenhouse and they gave a decent crop. Very fine pods and the plants kept going for months with a feed every week or so of tomato fertiliser

Good crop at first but soon stopped producing :-(   I probably won't grow them again...

That's perfect for what I want though, just a good quick flush of pods before the main plants start producing outside.

I sowed speedy late June as a stop gap. Nice crop of beans that stayed tender. They did all come together and are probably bred for machanical harvesting.

Dont know about speedy but i grew fararie  this year and they have been really good, lots and lots of beans, good flavour and they are still producing, been picking 1.5 kg every week for the past 2 months and a little less for about a month before that, 24 plants, i will be doing these again for sure.
