Age old mite problems
« on: September 30, 2012, 17:01 »
Dear Hen keepers, yet again this year I have had immense trouble keeping a control on the blasted red mites.  Yes the weather hasn't helped and I am at the point of wanting to burn my largest chicken house!   I had an email from Hillfooter last year and have used poultry shield to clean and try to limit the problem and now want to try a pesticide.  Am sick of having the little critters on me as well as my hens!   Any idea where I can get products like Ficam in Ireland??  Any ideas pleeeeaaaseee  :(

Have used the diatom slurry and this works in small houses where I can access all areas but the large house has too many nooks to get to.

Did you try Hillfooter diatom slurry?
I got rid of mine as the chooks were housed elsewhere for a few months and the coop was dismantled and sprayed with parrafin a few times. Would not recomend this with chooks using one though.
Found red mite contamination due to wild birds coming in, enclosing the house area will cut this down.

In the UK Ficam W is only for people who hold a license to use such a pesticide and is not for back yard poultry keepers.
Staffies are softer than you think.

The predator mite could be a solution.  Don't know how much they are or if you can get them this time of the year.  Here is some useful information.

Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens!
Bagpuss RIP 1992 - June 2012, 1 huge grass carp (RIP "Jaws" July 2001 - December 2011), 4 golden orfe, 1 goldfish and 1 fantail fish (also huge)! plus 4 Italian quail, 1 Japanese quail, 1 Rosetta quail.

I can put my birds in a stable for a while so maybe I will try the parrafin, any details on your mix?

I think I may be too late to try the predators as the weather here is cooling, well never got hot really!!!!

Can you get hold of November's edition of Practical Poultry?  There's a new product out that they say will  almost immediately get rid of red mite and you should be able to get it from Bowden and Knights.

It was paraffin squirted and soaked into the cracks. House was dismantled and allowed to fully air.

This is very good, but does need a repeated application to keep them under control. You must follow the instructions strictly as it is potent!!

I did use it myself when I had a wooden set up myself, but if you can try to take it apart for more successful results. I didn't and had to repeat.

I can also reccomend them as suppliers for feeders and other chickeny stuff too.

That's it Anndee!  It's expensive but the article did say that they are hoping to bring out a smaller product for the back garden chicken keeper.  It looked very effective!
