Wire frame raisers...
« on: September 28, 2012, 21:25 »
Hey now, we only discovered this recently!

We have lots of wire hoops (coutesy of a retired allotmenteer), and while these are great just shoved into the ground, they are not that high, and carrots under fleece, kohl rabi etc seem to say "Oi, where's my height"...

Just on a whim (and a prayer), we found that a few canes cut back (great use for all the old and bust ones), make great receivers for the wire frames, and therefore, we've got another foot of height under the netting!

Just stick the wire frames into the cane ends, and Bob's yer auntie!

Just like that!

(I'll do pics if you want them, but it's not rocket science; just bring the two together, just as we did on a silly moment, wandering about the various patches...)

Oooooh buqqqqqqer,

I knew that would start something...

All we've done is take wire hoops, and instead of sticking them straight in the soil, we've stuck them into the tops of canes and stuck the said canes in first.

If it's sunny tomoz, I'll get the camera down there, but Mrs G will get very cross if we're not working Hard, so we'll be back discussing this with you in a svery erious voice young lady!

Thank you Growster, your description is clear, ...but you mentioned photos first. ;)

Surely Mrs G allows you a two minute break from digging to take photos? ::) :D

I'll take the ole Truprint Machine down tomoz then, Arugula!

We're actually quite proud of the result, as we were given loads of these metal hoops by a retiree, and somehow, they've got used all the time this year!

I'll get the pics tomoz - they'll just show what we've done, so no big deal, but the system seems to be another (propably silly) early Growster design, and completely innocent - as would be expected of course...;0)

But it would seem to work...'0)

They're those metal hoops which you're supposed to put plastic sheeting through!

Naaaaah, don't like those...

Got a better idea!

It works with old water piping too, the plastic kind...

That's it Annen!

Prezactly the same concept, only different!

But as I fear a beating around the head with a blunt instrument from certain people if I don't provide some pics, I'll show you mine, but it'll have to be this evening Arugula...

;0)

Like the way your beds just get enclosed with so little bother Annen. We're using debris netting, and touch wood, it is pretty good except when it blows hard...

As promised (on pain of whatever I was going to get if I didn't post these pics), here are a few snaps of the wire raisers!

The first one (with a few holes, whch are going to be darned at some stage during the long winter evenings), has some kohl rabi underneath, and they seem quite happy.

The second two show the carrots, which seem to have survived 'the fly' - presumably because the netting is quite tightly woven.

Mrs G remarked that the carrots are quite pale, and I just wonder if the green netting is excluding some of the light they need, although the flavour is fine.

The clothes pegs are there because the netting didn't quite fit across one end, but we use them all over the place!

Clothes pegs, like odd bits of string and broken bits of cane, are an indispensable gardening accessory  ;)

I used to do that for my brassicas, but more often with old plastic piping until someone, who's name shan't be mentioned decided I didn't need the piping anymore!

Lucky you though to be given all those hoops!
