Rosehip Syrup
« on: September 27, 2012, 18:17 »
We seem to have a glut of Rosehips and I was considering making syrup with them, has anyone made it before and if so any tips?
All but one of the recipes I've seen on the web call for a food processor (which I dont have) though one talks about using a 'course profile mincer', would that mean one of those old metal mincers with the handle that turns, I do own one of those.

You could use that, in fact anything that smashes them up will do the job  :)

Don't make it myself but it's on my must-do list once I get enough plants producing enough hips.

Here's an interesting article LINK

And another one HERE

I just looked his recipe up, he refers to chopping instead of using a food processor. Thanks  :D

Hi All,
My questions are - what about the irritant hairs I've heard rosehips contain? Is straining enough to get rid of them? And can you use cultivated rose hips i.e from rosa rugosa (which has huge hips!) or just those from dog roses? I loved rosehip syrup when I was a child and have always fancied trying to make some, but have been put off by the itchy-hairs issue. Any advice gratefully received  :)

straining through a muslin cloth/jelly bag removes the hairs  ;)

You can use any hips - but I use the Rugosa hips from the Council hedge  :D
