Kifli potatoes or Sarpo Gwyn?
« on: September 24, 2012, 18:22 »
i grew kifli this year as my blight resistant row, they all got blight and the yield wasnt very good. previously i have grown sarpo mira and sarpo axona which were totally untouched by blight.
kifli altho not as blight resistant tasted better than the other two which i found very dry and not very tasty.
planning on trying sarpo gwyn next year, has anyone else grown this type? if yes opinions please ?

My sarpo mira were relatively blight resistant but I am not too keen on their taste. They are OK.  However the real star for me was pink fir apple. It was growing right next to vivaldi which was blight ridden and didn’t show any signs of succumbing AND they taste absolutely delicious AND the yield was enormous.

Yes, they really are blight resistant. Mine were the only ones still standing after the others succumbed this year.

I agree PFA are tasty, but have you tried making mash from them?
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

My P.F.A were affected by blight but I still got a reasonable crop. They made superb mash though D.D.

From the books they are meant to be small but I grew some reasonably large ones that still tasted great.

I didn’t try mashing them; are you guys teasing or do they really make good mash

I've grown them a few times and love them. :D I think DD is teasing you as they are all crinkly and wrinkly and not ideal for peeling and therefore mashing. ;)

I haven't mashed them, but the flavour is great and the texture I believe would mash fine so if you can be bothered its probably really good. :D

You could try them "crushed". ::)

I grew them in bags. My only problem was trying to get them out as they were so jam packed in!!

I might try just one seed potato per bag next year rather than 3 so that I can get some good sized ones for mashing  :D

You've got a point there D.D.  S.W.M.B.O usually takes pity on me though ;)
