Advice on using manure!
« on: September 23, 2012, 19:43 »
Hi folks

I have raised beds on my lottie and this has been my first year. Last winter I covered my beds with a weed membrane to keep the weeds down, which worked well.

I have be given well roted cow muck and I want to put it on my bed that the spuds will go in next year.

Do I put the muck on the top of the soil and leave it over winter. Or shall I put the weed membrane on top of the muck so its covered for winter?? Not sure if it should be exposed or not?

I would leave the membrane off. The worm's should dig all the muck in for you overwinter.

the argument for putting the membrane back over the muck is that you won't get as much of a crust at the top, and the worms can work right to the top, and you'll tend to kill off or at least weaken any weeds growing from the muck.

but as long as yours is crumbly I wouldn't worry either way
