Sharp Frost This Morning
« on: September 22, 2012, 07:42 »
We had a sharp frost this morning and I don't hold much hope for the tender crops as they are well frozen: - courgettes, french beans, runner beans etc >:( Fortunately I moved my main crop of onions inside last week that were drying on racks outside. I do still have a few smaller onions outside drying and they are frozen solid. Not sure what will happen to the apple crop!

Can't remember such a hard frost so early.

We only went down to +4 but it feels colder than that even now - you can see the dog's breath outside. I thought the recent stormy winds had done for the courgette plants but there were five growing on a plant in the corner of the polytunnel yesterday. :) I'll see what the beans and other crops think of the cold later when I look properly. ::)

Gosh Fisherman, I'm in Lancashire but by the coast, so missed all the frost. I must get my drying onions in from the greenhouse tomorrow. Having said that, I got a bit of a suntan today whilst washing my car. Crazy!
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Two people in work from different villages complained of having to scrape their windscreens this morning. We were ok, but I think I had better get the rest of the beans in. :(

Just back from my jollies  in Ibizia where it was 33 degrees.  Woke up to find the tops of my courgettes brown and crispy after a frost.  Its not even October yet

Well so much for the sharp frost. The veg plot is now like a swamp. Now just remind me why I live in Lancashire instead of Ibiza or on the Mediterranean coast?

We had it as well in Manchester ...  On Sat I went to the plot early to get some veg for our show and watered the tomatoes to stop them being hammered - it seemed to work..

Today took a trip to see what has died or been hammered.

Beans - dead
marrows / courgettes / squash - dead
cape gooseberries outside - dead
sweetcorn - leaves look burned and wind blown some down last night - tied most to bamboos to support them
some toms outside - a bit frosted and looks like starting to get blight

Will sweetcorn survive the frost? I hope so as I have about 90 plants with growing cobs that need a couple more weeks!!
