Finally managed to grow watercress!
« on: September 13, 2012, 14:08 »
At the second attempt I have managed to grow and harvest watercress! Yippeee!  :)

Only thing different this time was not to stand the planter in a bowl of water - even though I changed the water regularly the whole lot went a bit manky (technical term!)

Certainly not claiming to have become an expert overnight, but up to now it seems remarkably easy - sprigs of supermarket watercress rooted in a glass of water for a few days, then planted into a container of old compost with dried chicken manure added. Put in a shady place, kept well-watered, and Eureka!

Not quite sure what will happen when the frosts hit as it doesn't look very tough to me - has anyone managed to keep it going at least part-way into winter? (preferably in a greenhouse - the planter's a bit big to come into the house!)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I succeeded during one summer and autumn but it did not survive the winter.

It survived last winter outside here in sunny Birmingham, but it was not a harsh winter, if I remember correctly.

My watercress which I was growing in polystyrene seed trays was completely forgotten about last year resprouted despite being covered in inches of snow, so I assume it is very hardy.
