Lumps
« on: September 11, 2012, 10:55 »
My big buff orpington hen has two lumps, one on her chest (under the crop) and another at her back end (below the vent). They are not hard lump but feel like they are fliud build up. they are getting larger, slowly. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? Both lumps are a good handful in size, if it helps.
Waiting for a call back from the local vet (she is out at the mo).

No, nothing.  :(
There is another vet I could us but it's quite a drive from me and I don't have any petrol until Friday (not enough pennies in the bank).
She is still doing all the usual chicken things but is also still lumpy.
If anyone has any ideas what is wrong with her please let me know, thank you.

Are you sure the front lump is under the crop and it isn't sour crop?

Don't know about lump at rear end, egg bound?

No, the lump is under the crop, breast area really, she is eating and drinking as normal and doesn't have any kind of sour smell. She is also still laying well. Her lumpy bits are squishy and feel like a balloon filled with water, neither feel hard at all. Can't find anything in my books or online to suggest what it could be. Plus the vet never did call back.  :(

Can you post a picture of them? There is something called waterbelly, but it's mainly found in older birds or meat birds that are rapidly grown and is linked to heart problems or some form of trauma. It's basically large sacks of fluid that appear between the legs and up onto the breatbone.

Her's a link that gives a bit more info -

Thanks for the link, I think that must be what she has. The description is spot on.
I can't really post pics because she is an orpington, so really floofy anyway, all her feathers hide the lumps beautifully.
The conclusion from the vet was to put her to sleep due to the problem being 'unknown'. I opted to keep her going as she seems happy enough. I'd dispatch her if she looked to be in a lot of pain though. For now she will stay our pet, Big Ginge.

I have an Ancona that had a similar problem (see Ancona Tumour Mystery post)  I thought she was eggbound but the breeder examined her and said it was a tumour and to cull her.  I kept her and she has turned into a beautiful looking bird  A copule  of weeks ago I discovered the lump had gone  though she hasnt started laying again.  I know I am a softy  but even though she isnt producing I am glad I didnt have her culled.
