Excellent lasagne material!
As you are someone that admits to being a bit of a novice to veg growing I can't understand why you need to constantly promote this method.  There are lots of other tried and trusted methods so It's a mystery to me why you are so evangelical about this one in particular.  It seems to be a bit of an obsession. ::)

Hi Ice. Thank you.

Sometimes people with an obsession (the domination of one's thoughts or feelings by a persistent idea) prove to be the path makers and leaders of modern innovative thinking.

Thank you Paul Plots - that's exactly what I thought when Mr Ice made his comments, but decided not to rise to the bait.

I like to think of myself as enthusiastic and eccentric rather than evangelical and obsessed.

Maybe I am reading this wrong, but the original question was about "BULKING UP" the soil, thereby giving greater depth for roots to gather niutrients. If you wish to buk the soil up, then I wouldn't have thought that you want it to rot down quickly. With a generous helping of manure there should be plenty to keep the plants going and plenty of moisture as well.

Just my take on it.  :)

I think you'll find it's Ms Ice, for a start!  ;)

You must admit that you never miss a chance to slip a reference to Lasagne gardening in whenever possible ...   ::)

Talking of Lasagne - I was surprised that my father actually enjoyed Lasagne for dinner the other evening but it seems salmon is now off the menu.  ::)

Completely off topic but I thought it'd make a change.  ;)

Don't worry - I have the same problems with bicycles.

This is an interesting take the use of wood chip. It is over an hour long if you watch the whole thing.

Thank you Yorkie for putting me straight. I wonder why I thought Ice was a male?

True Yorkie, but with the majority of people following gardening convention, it is statistically more likely that a less trodden path is going to be encouraged by a lesser number of people.

I would have preferred Ice's comments to have been made in a Private Message rather than single me out on a public forum - just a matter of professional courtesy from a forum moderator.

Please accept my apologies if I have been annoying. I will back off in future and limit my use of this site to questions I would like answers/suggestions to and my own diary. I guess the world is not ready for me yet -  :nowink:

This courtesy would not be appropriate in this circumstance, Kirpi.  When a moderator posts an opinion on a topic they do so as an ordinary forum member not as a moderator.  They are just as entitled to make their opinion public as anyone else is.

You'll know when the have their moderator's hat on !  ;)

For bulking up soil, use whatever you can get hold of that is safe. Not everyone can get hold of everything, so this is the factor to consider rather than what is 'best'. There is no 'best'. A lot of stuff works, and it's even better if it's free.

As for bicycles, my answer is tacks  ;)
