strawberry runners
« on: September 07, 2012, 19:56 »
I have now seperated most of my strabwerry runners from the parent plants and have them in 3 inch pots. What is the best way to over winter them as i don't have a space as yet to plant them direct. Can I leave them out over winter or should I bring them into the Greenhouse, space will be an issue as i will have about 150+ plants.

Thanks

Strawberry plants can go moldy very fast in warm, humid enclosures so better to leave them in pots outside in a place you can find them and where they'll get occasional rain.

I just cut and plant the runners in the ground, they grew very strong this year, I don't see the reason of potting them

I agree with Bina. I always plant straight into the ground with very good results. I can't be bothered with dotting pots around and waiting for the runners to root before cutting from the parent plant. They root just as good if you cut them off and plant in the ground.
There is no better show of antisipation than a man sowing seeds in a field.

Hi guys,
thanks for the replies:
Trillium - the gh is on the plot and is not heated, it is only made of glass doors and didn't go above 8c last year.
Bing and lacewing i had to put them in pots as the were almost growing on top of each other and those going out they bed went onto well used pathways. There is no where on the plot that they could go at the moment
I am in the process of clearing another part of the plot to plant all the straw there

Thanks again

I did the same last year and left some in the GH in small pots and some on my rooftop garden in big pots... they all were planted out in spring and all did well.. So just put them where you can till early spring. You could still plant them in the new spot in october if you prepare it asap..
