Pests & Other Problems
« on: September 06, 2012, 16:01 »
No matter what you do some form of pest or problem will try to set you’re veg growing back >:(. Here’s a list of what I’ve encountered this year and last and how I tried to overcome them if I possible: -

Spuds – Blight – Grow first earlies only.
Broad Beans – Chocolate Spot – No remedy.
Broad Beans – Black fly – Cut the tops of and squish them.
Brassica’s – Slugs and more slugs – Nematodes, Blue Pellets, Torch & Scissors.
Brassica’s – Cabbage white butterflies – Grow under enviromesh.
Leeks – Rust – Cut off affected foliage.
Beetroot - Mice eating them – Trap them.
Fennel – Slugs & more slugs.
Courgettes – Mildew – No remedy but they always get it.
Carrots – Slugs & more slugs.
Carrots – Carrot root fly – Grow under enviromesh.
Garlic – Rust – No remedy.
Brussel Sprouts – Drowned – Provide protection in severe wet weather.

Some things weren’t affected by anything: -

Runner Beans
Onions
Shallots
Lettuce (in containers)
Peppers (in greenhouse)
Cucumber (in greenhouse)
Spring Onions
French Beans
Various salad crops
Swiss Chard

Apart from the wet, wet weather its not been a bad year :)

Moral of the story – pest and problems will always occur but prevention is far better than cure.
Have you had any pests and problems and can you give advice on successful prevention?

Good information Fisherman and thanks for sharing it!  As this was my first year at growing I have only attempted to grow a few vegetables but ofc I've encountered some pests and other problems.

Peppers - Aphids - Cure: aphidoites worked a treat.  Prevention: quarantine any cheap, half-dead plants I buy before they infect my plants grown from seed.
Peas - Pigeons - Prevention: cover peas with netting
Early potatoes - Nibbled by mice/rabbits/slugs - little damage and harvest was still plentiful so can let them live until they become a bigger issue
Strawberries - Eaten by wildlife - 1st year so wasn't expecting many and took no precautions
Echinachea - Not enough TLC - will learn more about its ideal growing conditions and try again next year

Unaffected:-

Red/Normal/Spring Onions (under enviromesh)
Carrots (under enviromesh)
Parsnips (under enviromesh)
Swede
Maincrop potatoes (in grow bags)
Garlic (in pot)
Lettuce
Tomatoes (in conservatory)
Herbs (mint, basil, parsley, corriander, dill, rosemary, nettles)

The maincrop spuds were killed off with unexpected frost last week while I was away on holidays but they should be ready so I'll check the condition of them this weekend.  I could've checked the forcast and fleeced them to prevent frost damage but since I was away there was nothing I could do.
Add me on PSN but nowadays I reach for the fork or hoe more than a controller
