Clean up after Harvest
« on: September 05, 2012, 08:45 »
Bits of the plot are coming free now but have got a bit of weed, mainly grass really. Can this just be rotavated in or is it best to spray it with round up first.

Depends what grass it is!
So long as it's not couch grass then you will be fine to just dig/rotavate it in.
If it is couch then you will either have to dig it out first or as you say spray it  :)

If i where you i would just dig the patches over with a fork as they become available  ;), as if they are only small patches it would be pointless using a rotavator!

Every year I wonder whether I should be bothered to weed after harvest when I will be digging it all over and weeding it thoroughly next March.

Cut the dead plants down, scatter some manure over the weeds and retire indoors for the winter with a good seed catalogue or three.  :D
Sometimes my plants grow despite, not because of, what I do to them.

Chuck a load of lawn mowings etc., over it all.

Keeps weeds down, and also adds a bit of nitrogen for next year!

Mine's getting sprayed off then spread with manure. It can sit like that untill spring, then rotavated.

If bits of the plot are coming free get something edible bunged in. I'm still sowing and planting on the basis that nature abhors a vacant plot!

Sowing some late Kohl Rabi tomorrow.

Under cloches and/or nets, they might just work if we have a late summer!

Carrots are going great guns, and they're far too late as well.

Peas are whistling away too, under debris netting and the pods are enormous, which amazes me...

I am about to put in some early peas today from the guttering they have been growing in - I anticipate a long summer now it's here!
