Storing seeds
« on: August 30, 2012, 14:29 »
My wife has commented on the amount of space I use up in the house for my gardening stuff, books, magazines, gloves pruners etc, I do agree for the most part, but I like to know where it is!
But I have decided I should move everything into a shed.
However I like to keep my seeds inside to keep them cool.
I have had an idea that I would like your opinion on.
We have a fridge freezer which needs to be recycled, would this make a good store for seeds?
It is pest proof, and the insulation would keep the heat out.
Is this a good idea? Or is there a reason not to use it?

other than the gasses it might contain and that its really BIG......unless you're a seed bank in the making

I use a biscuit tin with envelopes in it - very low tech

No gasses, thats why its being retired, I thought it might also be a secure place for weedkiller and plant food as well. I dont expect to fill it up with seeds, but at 50p a packet at the garden centre who knows...

I think it's a super idea Lawrence if you have space in the shed for it.  Will also be good for those cardboard boxes of plant food etc that always seem to get damp.

I wish I could fit all my seeds in a biscuit tin jrko but I haven't found one big enough yet!  Maybe when I get the seed pass the parcel I can have a good weed out.  :)

I have 4 tins on the go!  Thats the trick when using biscuit tins.  You have a good reason to keep buying biscuits because you need the storage for seeds

Whats better on the plot on a damp day, than a fresh brew, a biscuit (or 7) and sorting through your seeds?  ::)

I would be concerned that the seeds may contain some damp, and therefore rot off in the FF if there is no air circulating.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

there's no air ciculating inside my tupperware box, and seeds don't rot in there, as long as they're dry in the first place.
If they're already damp - it's pointless trying to store them, anyway  ;)

Thanks!

The top shelf is my self saved seed, mostly from stuff I have found on holiday or the ethnic shops or the big seeds like dent corn that came in paper packets and wouldn't reseal.
The rest is basically mixed up at the moment, but now I have a proper home for them I can organise.
Now do I go for alphabetical order, or date of sowing?

You just had to complicate things
Had to call into the garden centre today, came out with another 10 packets @ 50p each.
Only bought 20 packs in the sale this year...
And I just found a website listing 650 varieties of Chilli and they only charge €1.50 a pack and €2.00 P&P.
I am trying very hard to keep my basket under 30 items, I am not doing very well :nowink:
