From my father who (before he died) had his own car repair shop, I spent many happy hours watching him work (never on a Wankle engine though).  I even used to help him skim and undercut the commutators on armatures.  That was in the day when you could get starters and dynamos repaired rather than replaced.

You would have LOVED his workshop Munty.  It smelled of engine oil.  he had an old baking tray of paraffin for cleaning things in with an old paint brush.  The number of times he dropped his fag in it   I used to get some of the duff jobs to like sand blasting spark plugs and testing the armatures on a growler to see if the windings were OK.

His lathe system was built by my grandfather and ran by leather belts running over big wooden tapered barrel thingies.  You should have seen his battery chargers.  they looked like something out of frankensteins monster   They used to spark when he moved the leaver over the contacts to "wind em up a bit"

I still have some of the screwdriver that my dad made...  Ah Happy days - thanks for bringing them back Munty  :D

Am I correct in thinking that mazda took the wankel engine and so developed the rotary engine that was present many years after wankel stopped producing cars?

Wankel engines are not a very common type of internal combustion engine.  The rotary engine never seemed to catch on, piston engine being much more preferred, even though the Wankel engine is light weight and high powered.  It requires more complicated fuel injection technologies than for four-stroke engines, and they can be more susceptible to pressure loss at low RPM compared to regular piston engines.

However a positronic screwdriver is purely science fiction.

and you gleaned that litle bit of info from ?

I thought everone knew that Munty.  Maybe you should go back to school.
