Potato Crop Ruined !
« on: August 20, 2012, 19:57 »
This year my potato crop has been totally ruined by slugs.  I am gutted :( just wondered how I can prevent this from happening again next year.  Is there anything that can be dug into the soil to stop them breeding?
Thanks

Nematodes are useful but expensive. However you are not the only one who has suffered devastated potato crops - has been such a wet season that slugs have been the best crop of the year on most allotments I suspect - closely followed by snails.

Drier weather next season would be a very helpful and inexpensive cure.

I know some people throw a few slug pellets in with the seed potatoes, and then again when they earth up  :)

There are also varieties of potatoes that slugs are less likely to nibble   ;)

I have four varieties of spuds growing this year, two 2nd early, Kestrel and Marfona, and 2 maincrop. The maincrop I haven't lifted yet yet but out of the 2nd earlies, the Marfona which were good last year have been riddled with slug tunnels.

The Kestrel...................... there isn't a mark on them.

My Marfona 2nd Earlies have been decimated by Slugs whereas my Charlotte 2nd Earlies have been hardly affected.
99% Organic and 1% Slug Pellets.

Allotment holder since 27th May 2007.

Welcome to the site  :D but sorry about your spuds  :(

You're not growing the spuds on ground that was recently grass, are you?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
