B B B B..... Blight
« on: August 17, 2012, 13:23 »
Mutter

Have been sat quietly hoping to have missed the blight hammer, but went out today to pick a few tomatos for dinner.....

Yup plants that look absolutly fine yesterday are now a wilting rotting heap

 :(

Have to grow outside due to lack of space, and have been lucky in the past
Ah well, the cut and come again lettuce looks nice!
Very often quite lost- would be more lost if I could work out where I was!- But always find my way home.....

Sorry to hear it mobilekat. :( Were you growing any particularly "fancy" varieties?

Hi Argyllie

As I have very limited greenhouse space I had gone for 2 cherry varieties- as never get anything else to ripen outdoors!

Tumbling Tom Yellow and F1 Apero, wanting flavour and small size - so they would hopefully ripen before winter!

The Apero have a lovely flavour, and I will try again with them next year, I hope to try a Tumbling Tom, if the 2 in the greenhouse survive!

I think this year has been such a frustrating year!

All we need is someone to develop a blight proof, fast ripening tomato that taste and looks lovely.
That person will make a fortune!

I can only get cherry types to grow and produce fruit which ripens outdoors here too and they're coming along at last now - Gartenperle and Tumbling Tom. This year I have a heritage variety in the polytunnel and no others - we've suffered botrytis in there in the past with overcrowding combined with weather conditions. ::)

Its not easy, is it?

We do!

I have read about Lizzano, which are meant to be the most blight resistant cherry toms, so may try them next year.

Its a hard one, and I also tend to need ones that are resistant to splitting, because when I am away (due to work)  my OH doesn't always remember to water things (he is good, but tends to think every other day is OK, and forgets that some things are greedy!)
Plus my garden is on a 60 degree slope and terraced, so very little space for greenhouse- so I only have a mini walk in one.

Fingers crossed for a better year next year!

Lizzano sounds interesting. :)

Fingers crossed for a better year next year!

After this summer and last, surely it can only improve!
