Sexing a Vorwerk?
« on: August 14, 2012, 23:04 »
Was wondering if anyone can sex this Vorwerk from the photo?
Its about 12weeks old and i have been told it is most likely a hen, however I am unsure.

I don't know the breed but the tail feathers look decidedly cockerel like!

It might just be the angle of the photo though.   ;)

I have a Vorwerk vacuum cleaner but that's not very helpful.

The tail feathers do seem quite long, however I think hens of this breed have that.

They do but it looks like my light sussex cockerels tails did when they were young.  It may be that the feathers are ready to be replaced with the adult tail feathers so hopefully your chick will be a hen.

Here are some vorwerk pics... http://www.feathersite.com/Poultry/CGP/Vorwerks/BRKVorwerks.html

How long have you had it?  It doesn't look feathered enough to be 12 weeks old, more like  7 or 8 I would think

I have only had it since Monday (3 days) and it was unexpected, so although I was told 12 weeks of age I am happy to accept your estimated age. Thanks for the interesting link, which I have tried to study closely.
I am still very much undecided, but fingers crossed for a hen.

I have had Vorwerks and that does look like a young cockerel. If you are prepared to keep him, they make a beautiful cockerel - and quiet too!.

How sure are you of it being a him? I can't get away with any crowing where I live, unless he would be very quiet.

If it is a male then I would try to re-home him.

I'm about 90% sure that's a cockerel. Give it another two weeks and post some more photos- the tail feathers should be more pronounced then.
With the females the transition between back and tail tends to be smooth, almost "U" shaped. With cockerels it tends to be "L" shaped - which is what you've got there and the tail feathers seem too long for a female, even of this breed.

I had to rehome my Vorwerk cockerel because he was being ganged up on by my two other cockerels because he was the youngest. He's made a fine, handsome fellow and his new owners says he's very quiet - but does love his ladies!

I wonder if that is a trait of the breed or just a quiet cockerel.  I wouldn't mind one of those.   ;)

Here are some more photos taken this afternoon (18/08/12), for anyone to comment on the sex.

One thing i have noticed is that some of the tail feathers are damaged (bent), which is making them stick out a bit.
