Perpetual spinach confusion
« on: August 10, 2012, 22:26 »
I wanted to try some perpetual spinach in my tunnel, in the hope it'll give me some leaves in the winter, but I'm a bit confused by the seed merchant listing. DT Brown has it listed as Chard (Spinach Beet) Perpetual Spinach. Talk about covering your bases. I don't really want more chard because I've already got some. Is this perpetual spinach or is it chard? Anybody know?

I'm not sure I can help but:

Kings Seeds sells "Swiss Chard" (the white stemmed type that some people refer to as spinach) and they sell "Perpetual Spinach" which has a thinner green stem and is pretty hardy.

I think I'd search for a different seed supplier if the description / names in DT Brown's catalogue is confusing.

IIRC perpetual spinach, chard and beetroot (and a bunch of other crops) are derived from the same wild plant. The difference between chard and perpetual spinach is that iPS is all green rather than having a white or rainbow stem. I think it tends to have shorter stems as well, though that might just be cos we pick it smaller than the chards...

we have all 3 and use them for different things

I always think Swiss/Silver or Rainbow chards are the kind with thick stems and pepetual spinach is still chard but with thinner green stems and slightly softer leaves  ;)

I'm with you on this one Aunty Sally.... my idea of what perpetual spinach looks like is exactly the same as your picture shows.

Very different looking from Swiss & rainbow chard. Different texture when cooked too I think.

Yes, that looks like the leaves from a normal beet, which is what I was expecting the perpetual spinach to be. I've been enjoying eating the tops from my beetroot as green veg, so I wanted a crop of purely leaf but the same as beet leaf.

In the end, I popped in my local garden centre and picked up a packet of Country Value Spinach Beet, which looks like the right seeds. I do wish they'd all use the same name to mean the same thing. It does say they should be sown up to July, but I'm going to give them a try anyway.

Yup, like the previous 3 posts Aunty's pic shows what I've always thought of as perpetual spinach, aka spinach beet.

However, those who are wondering where all the confusion has come from need look no further than Wiki's entry on the subject!  ::)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I sowed some spinach Matador in the greenhouse last year (premier seeds, fleabay) and whilst they grew very slowly over winter, come spring, loads of lovely leaves.  :)

I agree, especially in the tunnel.  I grew some perpetual spinach in my tunnel a couple of years ago for the chooks, kept going for ages until one really wet and muddy day, we diverted the chickens into the tunnel for some respite from the rain.

The spinach lasted about 5 minutes after that!
