Grabbing those peskie wireworms.
« on: August 10, 2012, 18:00 »

After a few years on the allotment (that was pasture in all but name)  we still keep finding evidence of wireworms in our spuds.  So.  .  .

I've got some small dia' plastic rods which I'm going to push into a few spuds (already holed by wireworms) and I'm going to plant these back in the soil, the plastic rods will protrude from the soil showing where the spuds are.  Hopefully the wireworms will find these spuds irrisistable.

How long should we leave these sacrificial spuds to collect a good crop of wireworms and then dispose of spuds and hopefully the wireworms ?   ::)

Cheers,    Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

It takes at least 4 years for the wire worms to disappear after the land is cultivated after grass.

That is the approx. length of the time the spend as wire worms before the turn into click beatles and go to find some grassland to breed in.  So be patient :)

Just to cheer you up I have had the same plot for nine years and still have plenty of wireworm, someone did suggest that using manure may be the problem.
