I've just bordeaux mixed my toms
« on: August 09, 2012, 19:11 »
Have been nurturing my Marmande and San Marzanos since early March and now after 2 weeks away on holiday I come back to the tell tale signs of blight (mostly on stems and some leaves and fruit) javascript:replaceText('%20>:(',%20document.forms.postmodify.message);. Had it last year but by then the tomatoes were nearer to ripeness so still had a good crop. Tomatoes are my favourite crop so I couldn't resign myself and got my hands on some Bordeaux mix.
I sprayed this morning and am hoping to get some tomatoes to maturity after all.
Will post again and let people know how it's going as I can see many others are having the same problem.

I hate to be the bearer of (possibly) bad news, but bordeaux mix is a preventative measure needing to be employed in advance of an attack of blight.

Keep a careful eye and if the blight is spreading to the stems, take off any fruit you can rescue as soon as possible to try to save it.

Good luck

Although still licensed, bordeaux mixture will be withdrawn next year. It is basically a copper solution which is used to prevent not cure blight. Personally i would not go near any veg sprayed with it but each to their own.

Tomatoes are easily washed. Unlike curly-leaved lettuce, for example.

Just to clarufy the situation
Quote
RHS: Bordeaux mixture will be withdrawn from sale on 28 February 2013 but any person can use and store existing stocks until February 2015

This is an alternative which will still be available as far as I can tell......
