Shallots for next year
« on: August 03, 2012, 00:59 »
Some of my shallots did not do so well as they were planted in the wrong place
They formed into small bulbs but did not swell in a reasonable size I could use them for pickling
Or would they be ok to keep for next years sets.
Thanks in advance
John

Planting small shallots is found to result in larger shallots being harvested. So you're better off keeping the small ones back for planting:

ah good tip. To be honest I'd not have thought to plant out the small shallots left from this year's harvest. But will save a load to plant this autumn

It is handy to know. I read it on doing some extensive internet research before I posted that question. ::) Pity the same rule doesn't apply to garlic.

Where is the best place to store shallots for next year?  Fridge, paper bag in shed?  .........

We stored them in a cardboard box in a cool, but frost free, dark cupboard.

Thanks Argyllie!!!!   :)

I've got quite a few small ones, but had a good harvest too, so I can spare some!!!

I know some stalks are still green, but when I got back from Kent on Monday, they wre all flattened due to the weather, so dug them all up.
