What plants can't you mix different varieties of?
« on: July 31, 2012, 14:20 »
Hiya,

I know you shouldn't grow seeds from marrows / melons etc that may have crossbred, but I only found out yesterday that my sweetcorn crops have been rubbish the past three years cos you should only grow the one variety, oops!

Are there any more veg / fruit that you shoudn't mix the varieties of?

Thanks in advance, sorry all my questions are coming thick and fast, we're so late this year doing the allotment, we were only able to start last week!

Thanks  :)
Herbie

Can you plant different varieties of rhubarb in the same area, my rhubarb always looks sad and spindly  :( whilst everyone else has lovely thick stalks.

Don't automatically think the reason for your rubbish sweetcorn is because you planted more than one variety.   There are any number of other possibilities.

And don't finish a sentence with a preposition (or start a sentence with 'And') :D

Cheers,    Tony.

I've still got a groove across my 'swede' from a well aimed board rubber hurled by the English teacher.  'And' not a white board in sight 'either'.

Cheers,    Tony.

Herbie - the only thing I have found that isn't a good idea is to have peas and sweet peas growing next to each other as they seemed to cross-pollinate. My last two year's of growing sweet corn have been a disAAAAAster but I have eight "Swift" in my g'house and three outside. If I don't achieve one cob worth eating, I will eat my trowel1  8) Don't worry about grammar - that's not what we are here for (or - why we are here). Is it me, or have I noticed a bit of grumpiness creeping into some replies lately?
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

The teachers of old certainly knew how to instil the 'rules' of grammar. I think that those old board rubbers were made especially heavy to fly better and hit harder.  ::)

Thanks Aunt Sally!  :)

Quote:

Myth 4: You cannot end a sentence with a preposition

As with split infinitives, this 'rule' date backs to Latin. But it has no place in English. For example, the sentence:
'Who is that you are with?' is neither better nor worse than
 'Who is that with you?'

Thanks for the lesson, Tony  :tongue2: :tongue2: :tongue2:  ::)

You were lucky it was only the board rubber.  One of our teachers used to throw his glass eye at you if you were chatting - can you imagine getting an oversized glass marble thrown at high velocity at the back of your head when you were chatting to someone behind you?  Ouch!

I don't think your sweetcorn harvest could have been rubbish from cross fertilising - unless you kept seed from last year and they crossed then. Cross fertilisation wouldn't affect the harvest outcome if the seeds were from packets and not crossed from a previous year.

Am I right?

Unfortunately cross pollinated sweetcorn can be hard and taste unpleasant. It's been discussed many times before here's just one from the list with a couple of helpful links
http://chat.allotment-garden.org/index.php?topic=78398.msg882708#msg882708

You can sometimes get round the problem by planting an early variety, early in the season, and then later a different variety. The pollen shed and cob pollination, by the first sown corn, should be finished before the second crop corn has any silks.
