Best Brassicas to transplant now...?
« on: July 31, 2012, 13:43 »
Hiya

We're really behind this year with our allotment and we are going to buy transplant plants (around a foot high including the roots) to grow.

I would really appreciate if you could advise which you think will grow best in the UK this year?

Thanks so much
Herbie

KALE: I've a choice of:
Hungry Gap
Curly
Thousand Head
Pentland Brigg
Red Russian
Scarlett

Best cabbage you find? (there's around 20 to choose from so which do you prefer?)

CAULI: Choice of:
Purple Cap
All Year Round
Autumn Giant
Snowball

CALIBREZE / BROCOLLI: Choice of:
Green Sprouting Calibreze
Calibreze De Cicco
Romanesco
White Sprouting Broccoli
Purple Broccoli Late
Purple Broccoli Early

SPROUTS:
Darkmar 21
Red Rubine
Evesham Special
Early Half Tall
Seven Hills

We're going to be ordering them this week (they're on ebay) so would really appreciate any advice so I didn't have much luck with my brassicas last year at all :-(

All advice will be appreciated
Thanks
Herbie :-)

Hiya

Just looked through my list, they don't do Tundra Cabbage (that sound like it could cope with anything, lol).

I thought the same about Curly Cale :-)

Thanks
Herbie  :)

I don't think it's too late to sow winter cabbage. I've just potted mine on (Tundra and Savoy) along with the psb and they're still at the first real leaf stage so any sown now would catch up. And I do a sowing of spring cabbage and a late kale sowing in a couple of weeks. The kale is small when it goes through the winter but you get a long cropping in the spring.
Just trying to save you some pennies!!
