Sneezing Chick
« on: July 25, 2012, 23:30 »
I've noticed that my young light sussex chick has started sneezing, 'she' hasn't got wet nor been picked on and i'm all up to date with worming etc.
This is my first batch of chicks and i've never experienced it before.
Any ideas?

chickens don't catch colds like we do so she could have one of the following:-
something stuck up her nostrils - check and remove if this is the case,

hayfever - you can give a little bit of piriton but the amount needed I wouldn't like to guess,

dust allergy - are you using dust extracted shavings? Sawdust really is not recommended,

respiritory infection - is her breathing rattly, has she got snotty nostrils or bubbly eyes? Has something stressful happened recently such as a moult, just coming into lay or new birds introduced? If this is the case then a visit to a vets is needed as soon as possible for antibiotics. You will need enough to treat all of them.
Staffies are softer than you think.

I use chippings on the floor of the shed they live in (no dust), and straw in their nesting boxes which are stacked up against one wall of the shed.
They tend to sleep on a perch in the shed and are always outside in the day time.
Nothing stressful has happened for about 4 weeks and it has only just started, I guess it may be hayfever and I will try the piriton.
Thanks :)

I would be wary about using Piriton unless you know the correct dose as overdosage has the potential to cause excitability and convulsions.
Loratidine has a much larger margin of safety but I would prefer to discuss use/ dose with a vet.

I looked it up on the internet yesterday and went to my local pet store, there they gave me an allergy medicine for chickens.
Thanks for your advice though :)
