re-using gherkin vinegar
« on: July 24, 2012, 16:28 »
Can I? Looks like dill and pepper corns in it.

I was thinking of stuffing some eggs in there.

I've never re-used it for actual pickling but I often use it to add a bit of a more gentle vinegaryness to coleslaw etc. I would think, as long as you have kept it clean and only used a clean implement in it rather than a dirty one or fingers, it would be worth a try. :)

Do you not notice the vinegar going foosty before the gherkins are finished in that case?

They're only 1lb jars - they don't last much more than a week. !

I use it and my pickled onion vinegar, I have an old Sarsons bottle and I stick a few hot chillies in the bottle and top it up with the gherkin or p/onion vinegar, I have always done it... my mum did it and I got it from her, and I'm still alive, but bought shop vinegar (in my opinion) is stronger

Couldn't you boil the vinegar to resterilise it    Might knacker the dill but the flavour of that would be in there anyway.

I regularly confuse people by using words picked up from OH - dreich has had an outing regularly this summer (damp dismal grey days) and I totally confused a visiting ops manager who was just making polite conversation and asked if I had enough bedding for the weekend, by saying I was up to my oaksters (armpits) in it
