Too late to sow beetroot?
« on: July 23, 2012, 14:00 »
The beetroot that I had sown in April seems to have been given a second chance and have been picking it for a few weeks now. I usually get at least two sowings (if not more in a year) so wondered if I am too late to put a sowing in now?
I have my own cement mixer and not afraid to use it!!

Yes you'll be fine, I put some more in yesterday (as I did this time last year) and I'm only down the road

It's obvious really, if Argyllie can sow it in her cooler climate - that it'll be fine in Kent  :nowink:

I don't know if it just me but it has been a poor year this year for my Beetroot
I hope to sow some more this weekend if it stays dry. I sowed a three meter row three weeks ago under the cloch and only four seeds germinated all new seed this year as well .

Success with beetroot seems to have been quite variable this year up and down the country.  I usualy have loads but have struggled so far this year as well  :(

I have some module sown clumps planted out on the plot between sweetcorn which are coming along and may do a few more for a late crop  :)

My main problem this year with Beetroot hasn't been germination but bolting at least 25% have done up to now,  as i tend to grow bolthardy and even though its not 100% percent foolproof its not something i have seen before.

yes definitely fine to sow now - you have enough time left. I usually sow a few towards the end of August, too, ready to pick around Christmas and they are great: a little smaller generally but gorgeous nonetheless and ready to be smoked before going into a Christmas chutney.

I've even did some in the (unheated) greenhouse over the winter - but in a small "polytunnel" affair within the greenhouse - and why not, most of the stuff I use during the main growing season simply stays in the shed over the winter so it's then time to experiment - and they give me a lovely early crop each year.

The module sown clumps that I put out a couple of months ago are now edible size, and we had some this weekend mmmmmm

The direct sown seeds have been in for a month, and plants are still at seed leaf stage

I shall sow some more in modules, as we like beetroot right through the winter with roast dinners

I hope it's not too late because I've just had a free packet of beetroot seed with my latest DT Brown order :)

I've had a wonderful crop of golden beetroot in my polytunnel, no bolting at all despite the high temperatures in there. It's made me a believer, because I always hated red beetroot.
