Bacon breakfast spread...
« on: July 22, 2012, 22:18 »
Does anyone know of a way to have a bacon flavoured spread, which can be used on Ryvita - or similar?

We are Marmite fanatics, and I love marmalade on Ryvita, but this morning, we thought there could be a challenge for an alternative...

Any crispbread could do of course, but Ryvita is the clear winner here!

Hmmm.....a new Growster challenge, eh? ;)

How about... cooking some bacon rashers, probably only a couple as they will break into tiny pieces, then whizzing them up with a Philedelphia style cream cheese? You can get low fat variations of these cheeses..

I think you need to fine a recipe for Teewurst.  The only one I can find online in English is this one.  I'll have a look for some German recipes to translate this evening.

There are several other recipes thrown up by Google for "bacon spread", eg. this one.  There are also a few recipes for something called "bacon jam" which sounds interesting, see recipes here.

You can buy bacon bits (dehydrated stuff in a jar) It's generally used to sprinkle on salads but would be ok to sprinkle over low fat Philly ryvitas  :)

There is a product called bacon jam which originates in America.

A local eatery near me that does some preserves have just started selling them. There has been a bit of a foodie buzz about it on London Radio.

Friend gave me some to try in case I wanted to make some to add to my range of preserves.

It was delicious and could also be used on Pasta.

If you google it there are lots of recipes out there. Some rather strange ingredients

Marvellous links there Alastair - thank you so much! I especially like the recipes which seem pretty simple too!

Mrs G is being awoken as we speak, as she knows these things much better than me!

When you find the recipes on google you will find they have some strange ingredients; coffee being one of them.

As yet I haven't tried any of them. On my to do list as I have to replenish preserve stocks for selling and hunt down more venues.

Do let me know if you try any and what you think of them. :)

An update on the bacon jam for you Mr Growster...... I read in  a local paper that the bacon jam that  was being sold by a local eatery has been taken up by T......o and will be sold in their shops sometime in the near future.
