Funny strange toms.
« on: July 22, 2012, 20:50 »
I have some funny strange toms this year. Last year I saved my own seed and peculiar things are happenning.

Some of my Moneymakers and Marmande have thrown massive trusses, with several branches off one truss. Up to 30 flowers per truss. If they all produce toms, which it looks like they will, they will really take some supporting. Big trusses on Golden Sunrise too.

Now, some of my Gardeners Delight are producing exactly the type of long truss I would expect, but the forming toms on  a  couple of them seem to have "creases" much like a little marmande. Could they have cross pollinated and given me a Frankenstein?

Just a cross , no spare parts , stitching or lightning conducters involved. :)

Hope they turn out to be a good mix !

Just because you know what tom varieties were close to each other doesn't mean those are what pollinated your plants. Those bees are rarely co-operative   :D Mostly likely you've gotten pollen from several plots/yards away.

We have a tom growing on a Black Krim, which has several layers of fruit in a monster of a thing which I've never seen before...

The flower was a multiple bloom, and seems to have transmogrified somewhat!

The rest of them afer fine - just very slow to work so far, but they've started!

Those multiblooms always grow into 'cat-faced' tomatoes - very ugly indeed!

I pinch these off when I see them now ;)
