Tasteless carrots.
« on: July 21, 2012, 22:18 »
Grew some carrots for the first time this year, expecting them to taste much better than shop bought offerings. Not so. Is there anything I can do to put some flavour into them. (no adding salt before eating stuff please). ;).

After the fact, I've heard of some professional chefs who add a bit of sugar to the boiling water.

During growing season, my mum and I always add manure to our carrot soil. Despite unfounded claims of hairiness and forking, which we've never had, it feeds the soil which in turn feeds the carrots and gives them their flavour. It's all in the poop  ;) :D

If you layer the manure on top, then the roots shouldn't fork. My cheffie OH always adds sugar to the carrots in the pan.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

You want to know how to grow tastier carrots? rather than how to cook the ones you have?

mmmm I think it's down to variety and to some extent the weather

Nantes 2.
They sound good on the packet. At the moment I'm only pulling small ones, but I reckon they should be even nicer when young.
