Squirrels
« on: July 20, 2012, 10:39 »
We have about 6 squirrels that visit the garden as a result of bird feeders etc. This morning they attacked one of the chickens.

Any idea how I can prevent this or even better get rid of them!

Grey squirrel? Air rifle? ... Only joking... Make your bird feeders squirrel proof... They will soon get bored of attending your arden when they don't get any food from it.

I would move the feeders to an area where the chickens can't get to, to try and keep them seperate, are your chickens young or bantams?  I've not heard of squirrels attacking chickens did the squirrel attack because the chicken was eating scraps under the feeder?

Squirrels can be very nasty. I would want rid of them personally. It is not easy to make feeders squirrel proof. If you trap them be aware it is illegal to release them elsewhere and they should be culled. This may not be a popular answer but they are vermin - given that we are talking about the grey variety - and are not native, doing a lot of damage to birds and their nests, killing fledglings etc.
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

only grey squirrels (or the black version of the same species) are - our own native red squirrels aren't. If any vermin are trapped they can never be released again and need to be culled in a quick and humane way.
